What is Value Stream Mapping?

Value-stream mapping (VSM) is a visual representation of every step involved in the material and information flows needed to bring a product from order to delivery. It is a fundamental tool used to identify and eliminate waste. VSM is a material and information flow diagram. VSM is a critical part of identifying opportunities for lead time reduction and increasing capacity.

Why is Value Stream Mapping Important?

  • Helps to produce to your customer requirements

  • Identifies value-add vs. non-value add activities

  • Develops continuous flow wherever possible

  • Uses supermarkets to control production

  • Identifies the hidden factory

  • Distributes the production of different products evenly

  • Creates an “initial pull” by releasing and withdrawing consistent work

  • Identifies opportunities to increase production capacity

  • Creates potential to reduce lead time requirements
